Michaela DePrince, the world-renowned ballerina who inspired many with her extraordinary talent and incredible life story, has tragically passed away at the age of 29. DePrince's journey, from being an orphan in war-torn Sierra Leone to becoming a celebrated dancer with the Boston Ballet and other prestigious companies, captured the hearts of countless people around the world.

Born Mabinty Bangura, DePrince was orphaned during the Sierra Leone Civil War and endured immense hardship in her early life. Considered "unlucky" because of her vitiligo, a condition that causes patches of skin to lose pigment, she faced rejection and discrimination. However, her life took a dramatic turn when she was adopted by an American family at the age of four, who supported her dream of becoming a ballet dancer.

DePrince’s love for ballet began when she saw a magazine cover featuring a ballerina at her orphanage. From then on, she was determined to dance. Overcoming the racial and physical barriers that often exist in the ballet world, she rose to prominence, joining the Dutch National Ballet before moving to the Boston Ballet.

She was not only admired for her technical brilliance but also for her resilience, breaking down barriers for Black dancers in the often rigid and exclusive world of classical ballet. Her story inspired millions, and she shared her journey in her memoir, *Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina*, which further solidified her as a symbol of hope and perseverance.

Her passing is a heartbreaking loss for the world of dance and beyond. DePrince will be remembered not only for her grace and artistry on stage but for her courage, strength, and the way she paved the path for future generations of dancers.
